Terms of Service
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Whitelist This mobile application ("the App", "Whitelist This", "we", "us", "our") on Android. By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not install or use the App.
The App is published by an independent solo developer based in India ("the Developer"). Contact details are in §16.
1. Acceptance of terms
By installing or using Whitelist This you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy at https://whitelistthis.app/privacy. If you do not accept either, uninstall the App. Continued use of the App after Terms updates constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms (see §14).
2. Eligibility
To use Whitelist This you must:
- Be at least 13 years old. This matches the minimum age for a Google account, which the App requires in order to receive Gmail notifications. If your country sets a higher minimum age for online services or for entering into binding contracts (for example, the age of digital consent under GDPR in some EU member states, or the local age of contractual capacity), you must also meet that higher age.
- If you are under the age of contractual majority in your country (typically 18, though it varies), a parent or legal guardian must read these Terms with you, agree to them on your behalf, and be responsible for any subscription charges incurred through your use of the App.
- Have a valid Google account and a Gmail-enabled Android device.
- Be permitted by the laws of your country to use Android apps distributed via Google Play.
The App is distributed worldwide via Google Play but is not specifically tailored to any jurisdiction other than India. We do not knowingly market the App in countries where its use, or where the Google Play subscription model used to monetise it, would be unlawful. If you are in such a country, you may not use the App.
3. Description of the service
Whitelist This is an on-device Android utility that filters Gmail notifications. The App reads Gmail's notification metadata via Android's Notification Listener permission and matches each incoming notification against a list of senders and domains you maintain locally on your device ("your whitelist"). Notifications from senders not on your whitelist are suppressed by the App's filtering logic.
The App also includes:
- A home-screen widget summarising recent whitelisted matches.
- A QR-code exchange flow for trading whitelist entries with other Whitelist This users.
- A scanner for adding senders by scanning another user's QR code.
The App runs entirely on your device. There is no Whitelist This server, no cloud sync, no account to create, and no off-device storage of your data. See the Privacy Policy for the exhaustive list of what the App accesses and stores.
The Developer may from time to time add, remove, or change features. Material changes will be reflected in the App and on the project website.
4. Account and access — Gmail integration
Whitelist This does not require you to create an account with us. It does not sign in to Gmail and does not use the Gmail API or any OAuth scope on your Google account.
The App integrates with Gmail solely through Android's system-level Notification Listener permission, which you grant in Android Settings → Notification Access. This permission allows the App to read the metadata of notifications posted by other apps on your device, including Gmail. Specifically, the App reads:
- Sender email address
- Sender display name (where Gmail provides it)
- Subject line
- Gmail's internal message ID and the recipient Gmail account on your device
The App does not read email bodies, attachments, drafts, contacts, calendar, or any content stored inside Gmail. It cannot see emails for which Gmail does not post a notification on your device. You can withdraw the Notification Listener permission at any time via Android Settings; the App will stop filtering immediately and no further metadata will be read.
You are responsible for keeping your Google account secure. The App's behaviour depends on Gmail's notification settings on your device; if you disable Gmail notifications, the App has nothing to filter.
5. Subscription terms
Whitelist This offers an optional paid tier called "Pro" via Google Play Billing.
5.1 Plans and pricing
- Monthly plan: $1.99 per month (or local equivalent shown in Google Play at the time of purchase), billed monthly.
- Annual plan: $14.99 per year (or local equivalent), billed once per year.
Prices vary by region and are set by the Developer in Google Play Console. The price applicable to your purchase is the price shown in Google Play immediately before you confirm the transaction. Local taxes, where applicable, are added or included by Google according to its policies.
5.2 Auto-renewal
Both the monthly and annual Pro plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period. By subscribing, you authorise Google Play to charge your chosen payment method for each renewal at the then-current price for your plan and region, until you cancel.
- Your subscription will continue to renew at the same interval until you cancel it.
- Google Play will notify you before each renewal in accordance with Google's policies (typically 48 hours before charge).
- If we change the price of your plan, Google Play will notify you and seek the consents required by Google's policies and applicable law before the new price takes effect.
5.3 Cancellation and cancel-anytime
You can cancel your Pro subscription at any time, with no penalty, by going to:
Google Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Whitelist This Pro → Cancel subscription
The App also provides a "Manage subscription" link inside Settings and on the post-purchase screen that opens this same Google Play surface directly.
When you cancel:
- You will continue to have Pro access until the end of the billing period you have already paid for. We do not prorate or refund partial periods.
- At the end of the paid period, your account reverts to the Free tier (see §8). Your existing whitelist entries are preserved; senders beyond the Free-tier cap of 10 remain on your whitelist and continue to be filtered, but you will not be able to add new senders past the cap until you resubscribe.
5.4 End of billing cycle behaviour
- If your subscription renews successfully: Pro access continues uninterrupted.
- If the renewal payment fails: Google Play places your subscription into a grace period (3 days for monthly plans, 7 days for annual plans). Pro access continues during the grace period while Google retries the charge.
- If the grace period expires unpaid: your subscription enters Account Hold for up to 30 days. Pro access is suspended during this time. If payment is resolved through Google Play within 30 days, Pro access resumes; otherwise, your subscription is cancelled and you revert to the Free tier.
5.5 Managing your subscription
Subscription management — including changing plans, updating your payment method, viewing renewal dates, and cancelling — is handled entirely through Google Play. The Developer does not have access to your payment method and cannot make changes to your subscription on your behalf.
6. Free trial terms
A 7-day free trial of the Pro monthly plan is offered to eligible users.
6.1 Eligibility
- The trial is offered to new subscribers only, as defined and enforced by Google Play (specifically, Google Play's
NEW_SUBSCRIBEReligibility criterion). - Each Google account is entitled to one trial of Whitelist This Pro for the lifetime of that account. If you have previously started a trial — even if you cancelled it without converting — you are not eligible for another.
- The trial is offered on the monthly base plan only. The annual plan does not include a trial.
6.2 How the trial works
- No card upfront in the way that requires re-entry. Google Play uses the payment method already attached to your Google account; you are not asked to enter card details specifically for the trial.
- The trial begins when you tap "Start free trial" and Google Play confirms eligibility.
- During the trial, you have full Pro access.
6.3 Conversion and cancellation
- The trial auto-converts to the paid monthly plan on day 8 unless you cancel before then. On day 8, Google Play will charge your payment method $1.99 (or local equivalent) and begin the monthly subscription.
- To avoid being charged, cancel the trial before the end of day 7 via Google Play Store → Subscriptions → Whitelist This Pro → Cancel subscription. If you cancel during the trial, you keep Pro access until the trial period ends and are not charged.
- Google Play will send you a renewal reminder before the trial converts, in line with Google's policies.
6.4 What the trial is and isn't
The free trial is a Pro subscription with the first 7 days at no cost. It is not the same as the Free tier (§8), which is a permanent free product with a 10-sender cap.
7. Refund policy
Refunds for Whitelist This subscriptions are handled by Google Play in accordance with Google's refund policies. The Developer does not issue direct refunds.
If you would like to request a refund — for example because you forgot to cancel a trial and were charged, or because of an accidental purchase — please use Google Play's refund flow:
Google Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Budget & order history → select the purchase → Get a refund / report a problem.
Whether a refund is granted is at Google's discretion under its policies. We will, in good faith, support Google's standard process; we cannot override Google's decisions on individual refund requests and we do not have the technical ability to issue refunds outside Google Play.
Google currently offers an automatic refund window of 48 hours on most purchases, including subscriptions. After that window, refund decisions are made case by case by Google.
To the extent any consumer-protection law in your country grants you statutory refund rights beyond Google's policy, those statutory rights are unaffected by this Section.
8. Free tier
Whitelist This offers a permanently free tier with the following capabilities:
- Up to 10 sender entries on your whitelist.
- Unlimited domain entries (the domain UI is reserved for a future release; the cap is effectively unreachable in version 1).
- Full Gmail notification filtering against your whitelist.
- The home-screen widget.
- The "My QR" screen to display your QR code.
The Free tier:
- Does not require a credit card or payment method.
- Does not expire.
- Is not a time-limited trial of the Pro tier. It is a separate, permanent product offering.
The QR scanner that adds new senders by reading another user's QR code is a Pro feature and requires an active Pro subscription or trial.
If you cancel a Pro subscription, your account reverts to the Free tier. Senders you added during Pro that exceed the 10-sender cap remain on your whitelist and continue to be filtered; you simply cannot add new senders until you are back under the cap or resubscribe.
9. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the App for any unlawful purpose, or in violation of any applicable law in your country.
- Use the App to filter or otherwise interfere with notifications you do not have a right to access (e.g. on a device you do not own or are not authorised to use).
- Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code of the App, except to the extent applicable law permits this notwithstanding the prohibition.
- Modify, adapt, translate, or create derivative works of the App.
- Remove or obscure any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices.
- Distribute, sublicense, lease, rent, loan, or otherwise transfer the App to any third party.
- Use the App to harass, defame, or interfere with any third party (including by manipulating QR exchanges).
- Attempt to bypass, circumvent, or interfere with the subscription, trial-eligibility, or billing mechanisms of the App or Google Play.
- Use the App in any way that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair Google's services or the App's intended operation.
Violating these rules may result in termination of your access under §13.
10. Intellectual property
The App, including its source code, design, branding, name, logo, mascot, copy, and all related materials, is owned by the Developer and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. These Terms grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the App on Android devices you own or control, for personal, non-commercial use, in accordance with these Terms and the Google Play Terms of Service.
No other rights are granted. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
User-generated content — your whitelist entries, your QR codes, your display name and email entered in the App — remains yours. We do not claim ownership of it. Because we do not collect or transmit it, we make no use of it beyond what the App does on your device.
11. Disclaimers
The App is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability.
Without limiting the above:
- We do not warrant that the App will be free from bugs, errors, or interruptions, or that defects will be corrected.
- We do not warrant that the App will be compatible with every Android device, OS version, or Gmail app version. Notification filtering depends on Android and Gmail behaviour that is outside our control.
- We do not warrant that any specific email will or will not be filtered. The App acts on notifications that Gmail posts on your device; if Gmail does not post a notification for a given email, the App cannot act on it.
- The App is a convenience utility, not a security or anti-phishing tool. Do not rely on it as your sole line of defence against unwanted, malicious, or fraudulent email.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. To the extent such exclusions are not permitted, the warranties in question are limited to the minimum extent allowed by law.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event will the Developer be liable to you for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, including but not limited to lost profits, lost data, loss of goodwill, business interruption, or any damages arising from missed, filtered, or delayed email notifications, even if the Developer has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
The Developer's total cumulative liability for all claims arising out of or relating to the App or these Terms, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise, will not exceed the greater of:
(a) the total amount you paid for the App in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim; or (b) USD 20.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited under applicable law (including non-waivable rights under Indian consumer-protection law, EU/UK consumer law, and equivalent regimes in other jurisdictions).
13. Termination
13.1 By you
You may terminate these Terms at any time by uninstalling the App. If you have an active Pro subscription, uninstalling the App does not cancel the subscription — you must cancel separately via Google Play (see §5.3). Otherwise, billing will continue until you cancel.
13.2 By the Developer
We may suspend or terminate your access to the App, with or without notice, if:
- You materially breach these Terms (including §9 Acceptable Use).
- We are required to do so by law, court order, or by Google Play policy.
- We discontinue the App or any of its features.
If we terminate your access while you have a paid Pro subscription, we will, where possible, work in good faith via Google Play to ensure you are refunded for any unused, prepaid portion of the subscription that you did not breach.
13.3 Effect of termination
On termination, your right to use the App ends. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including §10 (IP), §11 (Disclaimers), §12 (Liability), §15 (Governing Law), and §16 (Contact) — survive.
14. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do:
- We will update the "Last updated" date at the top.
- We will publish the updated Terms at https://whitelistthis.app/terms.
- For changes that materially affect your rights (including changes to subscription terms, pricing, or refund policy), we will surface an in-app notice on the next launch of the App after the change ships, and where required by law or by Google Play policy, will seek your renewed consent.
Continued use of the App after a change becomes effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not accept a change, your remedy is to cancel any active subscription via Google Play and uninstall the App.
15. Governing law and dispute resolution
These Terms and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them or their subject matter are governed by the laws of the Republic of India, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles.
You and the Developer agree to first attempt to resolve any dispute informally by contacting the Developer at the address in §16 and allowing 30 days for a good-faith resolution attempt. If the dispute is not resolved within that period, the courts of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India will have non-exclusive jurisdiction, except that nothing in this Section prevents you from bringing a claim in your country of residence where applicable law gives you that right (and that right cannot be waived by contract).
If you are a consumer resident in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction whose consumer-protection laws grant you the right to rely on mandatory provisions of your local law, those mandatory provisions are not displaced by this Section.
